Database developer and server administrator
STAR is currently searching for a database developer administrator to support real-time system database needs and data mining, data production database access needs (calibration, database-data logging, and data monitoring). The candidate is expected to help administering both online and offline database servers.
- During periods of data recording at RHIC, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the production environment of STAR's 10 node MySQL database servers (Linux based), database data logging processes, and database data migration to STAR's offline databases. With the assistance of STAR's computer and user support team, the successful candidate will help manage the online servers and should be directly involved in activities such as recommending or help deploy the proper network infrastructure in support of the database needs as well as fulfill the cyber-security requirements.
- Around the year, the candidate will also be responsible for maintaining and developing the STAR database API in response to the ever growing Physics requirements and demands and in support of the scientific program. This will include administering the master/slave database architecture used in offline event reconstruction and simulation processes and providing assistance and technical solutions to remote site replica database servers/clients.
The ideal candidate would have a strong background in database (MySQL server administration and schema design) and computer systems administration (Linux) concepts as well as knowledge in backup, data safety and scripting languages such as PERL. Knowledge in one C-oriented programming language (C, C++) is required and additional experience in web languages (XML, PHP, JavaScript) would be an asset. It is expected that the successful applicant will work as a Technology Engineer in the STAR group of the Brookhaven National Laboratory though candidates with appropriate scientific interests (Heavy-Ion Physics) and backgrounds (PhD in physics) would be considered.
STAR Simulation coordinator
The STAR experiment is looking for a coordinator for the collaboration's event generator and detector simulation efforts. The simulation coordinator will work closely with a the software and computing core team working on maintenance and further development of the STAR software framework and ensure the simulation needs and software components are satisfied and integrated in time to interpret ongoing and forthcoming research data from the STAR Experiment. The simulation coordinator is expected to actively participate in code development, coordinate the usage of computing farms at several institutes for Monte-Carlo production (consistent with a distributed computing model or Grid), respond to requests of the physics-working-groups and remain a high level awareness of the experiments physics program.
Requires a PhD in physics and eight years of relevant experience. Understanding of the software development paradigms in the field of Heavy Ion Physics, a strong background in programming using C++, FORTRAN, and GEANT, as well as excellent communication skills are required. Experience in recent development of geometry modeling would be an asset.
RHIC/STAR Group. Physics Department.
