Pb-glass Detectors for FPD Upgrade to STAR

The Pb-glass detectors that will be used in the FPD upgrade to STAR were originally constructed by the IHEP, Protvino group for FermiLab experiment E-704.  That experiment found unexpectedly large spin effects for the production of pions at large rapidity and moderate transvserse momentum.  One of the primary goals of the FPD upgrade, is to explore whether these spin effects persist at RHIC in collisions of spin polarized protons having at least 10x larger collision energy than in E-704.  A reference to the E-704 Pb-glass calorimeter is availble in Russian:
