Procedure of FTPC removal from the STAR detector
------------------------------------------------
1. Set up the installation platform
2. Rail installation
- Needed parts: 2 short (3') and 2 long (5') rails
2 clamp fixtures with 1' rail pieces
2 rail supports
- Mount clamps at IFC ring
- Mount rail supports in position at the far end of platform
- Mount long rails first, starting from clamp
- Add short rails ( Because they stick out over the end of the
platform you have to remove the top tube of the railing!)
- Rail adjustment
-- You need: Tape-measure, water or digital level ad straight bar
-- Rails must be parallel with 840mm distance (inner edge), horizontal
at same height and should be vertical on the IFC ring
-- Adjust distance and horizontal level starting at IFC ring. Outside
use the flexibility of the rail support.
-- To check the 90 degrees in respect to the IFC ring: Make 2 marks
on each rail at the same distance from the IFC ring and measure
the 2 diagonals.
-- Make sure that at the rail ends have a clamp as stopper
3. Preparation of FTPC
- Stop gas flow and cooling water circulation
- Disconnect gas ; put protection on inlet and outlet, but NOT gas tight
to allow chamber to follow the atmospheric pressure
- Make short circuit from supply to return gas pipe
- Disconnect cooling water. This can be done with underpressure in the
system to avoid a water spill. But the connection from supply to return
tube should be fast to avoid too much air in the system.
- Remove cover plates from RDO boards
- Disconnect all cables and glass fibers.
4. Mounting of the installation/removal chariot
- You need: The chariot consists of 2 side wings with 1 wheel each and
1 structure with 4 wheels. Plus (metric) screws and tools.
- Mount side wings to the chamber
- Move beam pipe toward the I.P. with flange at foil window position
- Remove lower wheels from structure and mount it to the side wings.
- Mount lower wheels (now below the rails!) and safety brackets
- Check position of rollers at inner side of rails. They control the
horizontal freedom between the rails
5. Removal from fixation points
- Loosen and remove nuts and washers from the 2 top fixation points
including the small distance shell from inside.
- Loose and remove nuts at lower fixation points. There are also 2
small shells with different diameter inside which have to be taken
out.
- Before moving the chamber check wheels on top and below the rails
and make sure that all safety brackets are installed.
- Pull out the chamber slowly and watch on both sides and ends that
nothing is in the way.
- Now you can remove pairs of special washers from the top fixation points.
- Move chamber to a position that there is a gap of 10-15 cm between
the front window and the beam pipe flange.
6. Lifting down from the rails
- Attach the short "FTPC-sling" to the crane fixture and a 10' sling
from there to the hook. Otherwise the hook can not go close enough
to the magnet.
- Make sure that the fixture is hanging vertical by selecting the
appropriate holes.
- Remove nuts and washers from fixture and insert the orange plastic
parts from outside into the lower fixation holes.
- Bring fixture carefully in correct position and slide bolts into
the fixation holes and secure them with shims and nuts.
- Change crane fixture to the extrem outside position and install
counter balance weights toward the extrem inward position.
- Crane can go up a bit to have some tension on the sling
- Remove lower safety brackets and lower wheels.
- Crane can lift up now and if everything is correct, the chamber
should hang quite horizontal.
- Bring chamber to the transport frame and mount it together by using
the asymmetric hole pattern to have it well balanced with the frame
together.
