is 90% and data volume is more than 1 mb/sec. Sometimes it becomes
as high as 2.5 MB/s.

donot know how to handle this alarm. Ignored.

12:19 PM: Got access to connected both crates. So far the indication
is that it didn't work.

4:00 AM: After beam comes back (2:45am) PMD was put in the data stream. Data taking rate was very low. It was taken out.

5038005: Pedestal
5038022: Run couldn't start as PMD shows large error. Rebooted PMD.

5038009: Trigger: Production High: 7K events

5038023: Trigger: Production Mid: 10K events

Data taking rate was about 25Hz and taken out.
 

HV Trip: Super Module number 20 tripped at some point.
I just noticed it now: 5:50am).

6:15am: HV of all good CPV SMs raised to 1400 Volts.

6:30 am: Pedestal taken - many channels didn't show up - run 5038030.
Turn off and on LVPS.
Pedestal taken again. This looks better. But compared to Run 5038005: we find
that: channel 40 doesn't come, channel 34 has a spike, channels 19 and 21
don't come now. What's going on?

1:15PM : There is no beam since 10:30AM. All the SMs are in Standby (1000V).
LVPS current checked. Chain 40 and one of the(18,19,21) may be OFF.

1:35PM: PEDESTAL Run# 5038042 taken for PMD @1000V.
Chain# 40,18,21 doesn't come. Chain-34 has a spike(probably one
board has gone bad) Other chains look OK.

2:35PM : Beam comes(PHYSICS RUNNING). We are not putting PMD into run when
beam is at high rate. Because PMD shows large error.

3:30PM : Only about ~2000 events has been taken without PMD. There was some
problem with DAQ. After few minutes Beam breaks instantly.

6:00PM : Beam is back, we will put PMD in when ZDC coincidence rate will comes
down (~less than 3600). We will not take 'ProductionHigh' trigger events.
PMD is ramping upto operating voltage.

6:45PM : SM(1,2,3,4,7,10,11) of CPV are at 1400V
SM(13 to 23) are @ 1400V and SM24 @ 1000V
CRATE 3,4,5 are ON.

7:00PM : Run #: 5038067 ~ 20K events has been taken for PMD with other
detectors(excluding FTPC).
PMD slows down the rate from (50-60)Hz to (25-30)Hz
From the next run took out PMD from the run.
From the online 2-D as well as ADC plot look chain 39,40 are OFF and
chain-41 gives some junk value.

7:15PM : Putting the PMD in STANDBY mode.

8PM: We took another pedestal. We noticed that all the channels with
VME Crate 2 didn't appear. We could have rebooted DAQ. Instead we
powercycled pmd01, pmd02 and pmdrps2.
New PEDESTAl looks fine => RUN no. 5039069.

Ramping upto PHYSICS voltage.

12:00PM : Run # :5040027 ~ 29,600 evts.

PMD is giving some JUNK in 3-4 chains. So we took out from the run,
Ramp down the voltage to take a PEDESTAL.

PEDESTAL RUN # : 5040029 taken. Chain-39 is giving "JUNK"(mean plot is
completely dark).

12:40PM : PMD include in the run but showing higher dead time with compared to
other detector. We talked to Tanko to mask that CRAM for the time being.

RUN # : 5040035 ~ 49K events
This run is good except chain-39
Took out PMD from the RUN.
2:00PM : Run # 5040040 ~ 5K events
Again Chain-39 is giving lots of JUNK.

There was controled access and Tapan bhai went into and took out the LV
power for Chain-39.

Pedestal looks OK. Now Chain-9 got OFF(don't kno why?) Otherwise rest of the
chains(whatever it was earlier) are fine.

7:15PM : Run# 5040076 ~ 2500 evts : Again it shows very high dead time.

Again PEDESTAL taken Run# 5040079 Sigma looks a bit high(May be now beam
is there).

RUN # : 5040085 ~ 20K events. PMD had to go out of DAQ as it was giving
large deadtime and slowing down others.
For this run chain#19 was lighting up.
 
 

10:45PM: Run 5040107: Pedestal with BEAM OFF. The pedestal looks fine.

10:51PM: PedasPhys runs give large error, 100% deadtime but doesn't stop.
 

11:12PM: RUN 5040111: Pedestal without Beam and with Full operating voltage.
Problem in running 100% Error.

PEDESTAL RUN # -  5044119       was looking fine. But after we leave Shift crews took pedestal taken. While taken pedestal they faced lots of problem, couldn't take pedestal successfully.

The mean and sigma plots completely messed up. The similar problem had observed in Chain-25,26,27,28,29,30  15 days back. (See the sample of one chain which has taken today). All the chains(CPV ,Preshower) are giving similar type of Pedestal plots.We susspect CLK or CLR or may be due ot NIM CRATE  problem. We recycled the power of NIM bins several times but no change. PMD is not in the run. 
What we did as suggested by Sushant(check the pedestal by powering LV crates one by one- 
1.We switched OFF the LV CRATES and took pedestal, mean value is 35-45 and sigma is 0.5-0.6 @ 1000V. 
2.Power ON LV crate-3 and took pedestal @ 1000V. Found the same problem as the above link . 
3. Power ON LV crate-4 and 5 one by one, took pedestal @ 1000V and found the same problem. 
 We will dig this problem on Wednesday(18th.Feb) access.
7:30PM There was some in the beam in the morning, data taking was there only for 4 hours. Around 7:30PM TPC gas system had some problem, so data taking had stopped. It started in the morning (17th.Feb)only for 1/2 an hour.

7:00AM to 4PM We noted a problem with NIM-3 (it was giving -4.3V instead of -6.0V with load). Crate is replaced with another NIM bin which was lying(marked PMD) in the clean room. After changeing we took pedestal and back to NORMAL. 

1.All the chains of Preshower plane has been debugged. We replaced some of the FEE boards which had gone bad and also we adjusted the buffer of some of the chains. 
2. Chain-39 has been connected to SEC-0,BLK-0,CRAM-9 ( starts from 0)
    Chain-40 has been connected to SEC-0,BLK-0,CRAM-10(starts form 0)
These mapping has to be taken care while doing chain mapping. 
signal of Chain-3 has been connected to Fan in/out of NIM-3 (earlier it was connected in NIM-2)

1st DAY of
ACCESS

WE (Subhasis and Debasish) HAD ACCESS AND WE WORKED ON THE BAD CHAINS OF THE PMD PLANE(NORTH SIDE).

We got lift and place to work at around 3:30PM after pole tip was retracted.

 We had a list of bad chains from last pedsetsla run during data taking (63 GeV).
So we wanted to fix them The list was impressive (25,35,36,27,32,30).

Before taking them we checked LVs on buffer board end for good chains to have some idea how they look like.

After that we followed vanilla procedure of removing boards and see if DB still holds.

for 25 >5 boarsd are removed to satisfy that. We are not sure if they are all bad voards, doubt is DB current limit is too low, and slight 'bad' also makes 'BAD'.

ALL bad chains are fixed except 33. (33 was not in bad chain list, but we see very low 
peds on scope and nothing on daq for that chain).

chain 37 was connected to CPV side DB, when we connect that to one channel of Preshower side DB, it worked fine. We chnged the slots in CPV side DB, no where it took. Bad DB? too low current limit.

 We did not want to play with DB.

We were in a dilemma whether to replace the bad boards with new ones, and sort of decided
 if those  new ones go bad in pp run, where we are not sure how much data we will take!!!

Chain 37 was finally connected to one of the preshower side DB taking the slot of chain 25 (i.e removing 25). this was done after thinking that 25 is in the outer circle,
37 is inside, for PMD taken apart, 25 will have more chance to be shadowed by magnet.

So, that's all for today. Will try to work on south side tomorrow.

of STAR magnet.

TODAY WE DEBUGGED THE SOUTH SIDE OF PMD PLANE.
We took a pedestal (at 0V) in WAH and started to work.Today we debugged the chains from 39 to 48. We removed the 46th chain. The other chains which we could not debug was 33 and 35. The rest are OK.

 Debasish was on shift and a  pedestal was taken at -1400V except SM 20 OFF , SM-24 at -1200V.(7PM)Now another pedestal taken and it seems that there is some STAR trigger problem . The peds dont look OK.
 Debasish discussed with Shift Leader Richard Majka and he also feels that Triggers guys are working 
on STAR Trigger. After taking peds HV is ramped down to standby.

TODAY we dont have lift and SO we took PEDESTAL( at 0V) once again in WAH.
We found that chain-30 OFF which we had debugged earlier on 5th April. So Subhasis went up in the late evening after we had lift from BBC guys and removed board-19 . Now chain-30 is OK. Now the final status that chains 25, 46, 47 and 48 are not connected. The chains 33 and 35 we wanted to debug but could not as BBC guys need LIFT and thats all for ACCESS.

THE SCALERS are yet not fixed by Trigger guys and  So pmd pedestal taken with SCALARS out
as there was no other option . The Shift leader Richard Majka also suggested the same to debasish.

Helen Caines the Shift Leader of morning shift and debasish tried to debug trigger and rebooted STAR trigger 2 times before taking PMD pedestal. Still scalars are out in PEDESTAL run.

The Chains in pedestal from 26 to 33 show OFF and LV connections for those chains show 0 Amps.
Subhasis , debasish and Rashmi discussed and suspected some LV OFF due to over current.

Same status and no improvement. All those chains STILL SHOW OFF!!!.

So Subhasis suggested to make HV of PMD plane to 0V as we could not understand and did not want to lose any more chains.

So after the PEDESTAL RUN #5101008 THE PMD IS PUT TO 0V and PEDESTAL TAKEN with 0V condition just to check the health of the chains from time to time.
 

rashmi and debasish took pedestals once again in evening and found chains OK NOW!!!!!!
This seems that the LV which had gone OFF due to over current are BACK.
But this surge of over Current did cost us and chains additionally bad now are
27, 30,31 and 44.
But still we are relived so see most BACK and pedestal taken at 0V.

He reported that they are ON and BACK to life which is reconfirmed from the pedestal status.

April 20,2004 Still Trigger tests continues and no Pedestals can be taken with PMD. Also today Les and others were tuning the triggers in the evening fill. But still the polarization tests were yet to be done. The bunches yellow and blue were synchronized as per  requirements ,as to which bunch pair interacts at STAR.

PMD HV is put upto -1400V and BEAM ON PEDESTAL TAKEN
and so HV remains -1400V till all PMD PP runs end.

Improper Trigger as Pre-Trigger is not set properly according to Les Bland.

This is the TRIGGER DETAILS OF Pmd TEST TRIGGER from Les Bland:

The east(west) BBC is a scintillator annulus tiled by hexagons.  The
 annulus covers pseudorapidity values 3.3 < |\eta| < 5.0 with full 2\pi
 azimuthal coverage.  The east(west) detectors are mounted on the outside
 of the magnet poletip at a distance of 3.74m from the interaction point. 
 There are a total of 18 hexagons in two rings in \eta.  Scintillation
 light is collected by 16 photomultiplier tubes.  A schematic drawing
 showing the BBC from a perspective outside of the STAR magnet looking
 towards the interaction point is available at

 in run 4 is identical to the one used in run 3.

 The BBC phototube currents are input to analog-to-digital converters
 (ADC).  With the typical operating voltages on the phototubes, a minimum
 ionizing particle produces a most probable ADC value of ~15 counts.  In
 addition to ADC data, when the phototube current pulse exceeds a 0.6 mA
 threshold, a time-to-amplitude converter (TAC) is started.  Each
 phototube's TAC is stopped by the RHIC clock, and the TAC current is input
 to an ADC.  The trigger algorithm that converts the charge and timing data
 into a minimum bias trigger is available at

 For p+p minimum bias events, the trigger is a coincidence between the east
 and west BBC small scintillator tiles.  The trigger requires
    . the summed charge from the east(west) small tiles must exceed
      10 ADC counts.
    . the channel that defines the timing for east(west) small tiles
      must have 25 < TAC_ADC < 180
    . the east/west time difference (proportional to the z position of the
      collision vertex) must be 166 < TAC diff < 346.

 The total cross section of the p+p minimum bias trigger has been measured
 by the vernier scan technique (steering one beam across the other to
 measure the horizontal and vertical beam size) to be 26.1 +/- 0.2(stat)
 +/- 1.8(syst) mb.  It is referred to in many STAR papers (see, for example
 hep-ex/0310058)

 For run 5114023, the trigger used was similar to the p+p minimum bias
 trigger, except that the summed charge from the east small tiles of the
 BBC must exceed 150 ADC counts.  This more stringent requirement
 is imposed so that the PMD pretrigger (>7 hit phototubes from BBC east and
 BBC west) is efficient.

THESE runs have PMD in but DO not HAVE the PMD TEST TRIGGER WHICH
IS SPECIAL FOR PMD so MAY NOT BE USEFUL FOR ANALYSIS.
