For the SSD Technical Proposal the impact of the SSD on the STAR capabilities
to reconstruct short-lived strange particles has been studied. This work is
summarized in the SSD
Proposal and is described in details in this
report.
The main conclusion of this study is that thanks to the gain in the number
of reconstructed secondary tracks due to the SSD and the EST tracking method,
the numbers of reconstructed K0 and Lambda are increased by a factor of 3.
The following figures illustrate this result :
- figure 1 :
K0 invariant mass distribution obtained with 170 Hijing events and
assumming no knowledge about the daughter particle PID for the SVT+TPC
geometry (top) and the SVT+SSD+TPC geometry (bottom). Relatively
loose geometrical cuts are firsrt applied to select the V0 candidates
(left), then more severe cuts are applied and adjusted in order to reach a
signal to noise ratio of the order of 5 (right).
- figure 2 :
Same as figure 1 but for lambda particles.
