Pb-glass Detectors for FPD Upgrade to STAR
There are two types of calorimeters that are being prepared.
Calorimeters that will be mounted left and right of the beam pipe on the
east and west sides of STAR will consist of three components:
-
a passive Pb radiator sheet followed by a 7-element Pb-glass
preshower detector. Each Pb-glass detector has dimensions of 3.7
cm x 3.7 cm x 45 cm. A FEU-84 photomultiplier tube is directly coupled
to the Pb-glass and is powered by a resistive voltage divider. The
Pb-glass detector is wrapped in an aluminized mylar reflector.
-
a scintillator strip shower maximum detector (SMD).
-
a 7x7 matrix of Pb-glass detectors.
A test stacking of the Pb-glass detectors is shown in the
picture below. In front of the Pb-glass stack are SMD planes with
wave-length shifting optical fibers that will collect the scintillation
light and transport it to individual pixels of a multi-anode photomultiplier
tube.
