The SVT detector will enhance STAR capabilities for
particle identification and momentum resolution and will extend the detector
acceptance for low 
phenomena. It
will offer unique capabilities for the study of
strange and multi-strange particle production and in addition
will allow HBT interferometry studies using neutral particles. The SVT
will also expand the STAR third level trigger capabilities. These topics are
discussed in more detail in the following.
