In recent months Ed Platner has proposed a muon detector for
STAR. It would consist of a set of drift chambers placed around
the return yoke. Due to the large amount of material between the interaction
point and the chambers, only muons would reach those devices. However
not only primary muons would be detected, but also 's
from particle decays. In addition hadronic shower tails might also
reach the muon chambers.
Recently Mark Tinknell [1] has performed analytical calculations
to estimate those backgrounds. He finds a neglible contribution from
particle punch through. However for decay muons the background seems to be
around 1 per central AuAu event.
In this report the background from and K decays is studied
using Monte Carlo information.
