Reed had a lot of fun with the spaghetti and water bottle today.  It was hard to get him away when we said it was time to clean up.  He had the most enjoyment rubbing it on his hands and arms.  You can tell it was very calming and relaxing to him.

Reed is very informative.  Today he showed us his scrap on his knee and told us he got it in the parking lot.  We tried to  hold a conversation about what happen but he just keep saying, "I got it in the parking lot".

Reed was being very creative with the wooden blocks yesterday.  He took the two half circle blocks and put them together to make a circle.  He then took the toy cow and tried to put the cow in the circle but it wouldn't fit.  He looked on the floor at the animals and then at the circle and picked up the pig and placed it inside the circle.  He was able to look at the animals and figure out which one would fit without picking each one up and trying it.

Reed was playing in the sand table with the boats and measuring spoons.  I guess Reed wanted a truck because he took a measuring spoon that had a hole in the handle and put it on a little knob that was on the back of the boat. He then pulled it around the sand making tracks and truck sounds.

Reed knows what he wants and doesn't want and knows how to express it.  Reed was playing with a friend that was going to go to the bathroom.  We asked Reed if he wanted to go with his friend and try to go to the bathroom and he said, "No, No, I am not big enough". I said he was as big as his friend and again the said, "No, I am not big enough".

During circle we were singing a rhyme about fish teasing a shark.   At the end of the rhyme I would change the words from, "snatched the fish out of the sea", to "snatched the fish out of the tree".  I would keep changing the word sea to see who was paying attention and every time Reed would tell me, "No the ocean, fish are in the ocean".

Reed came over and asked me, "What's that noise", and I said a plane.  He looked up in the sky and said, "Where, there's no plane".  I told him it was up in the sky but he couldn't see it.  He gave me a blank look and said, "Ok", and went on his way.

Today Reed came over to Ms. Cathy when ever she was doing something and asked, "What are your doing".  I would tell him and if I could show him and he would say, "Ok", and go off to play.

Reed wanted to play in the water table but four friends were already playing at the table. I talked to Reed and told him he could play with the oatmeal or the sand table until someone was done at the water table.  He did go to the oatmeal for a second and then came back and sat on a chair by the water table.  I asked if he wanted to play with something else and he said, "No".  I then asked if he wanted to sit on the chair and wait and he said, "Yes".  He sat on the chair and waited so nicely and when a friend was done Reed jumped up and said, "Me, me".  We put a smock on and he played in the table.

Reed worked really hard putting all the train tracks together.  The interesting part was it was not a straight track or one that had no end. It was a complete track that had curves in different directions and was continuous.  He hadn't asked for any help either, he did it on his own.   We were watching him and the last piece he put on he was making grunting noises as he pushed it in to fit.  It was a very impressive track.

Reed was riding the ride on toy and then got off to go play with a friend.  Another friend went to ride the toy and Reed went running over crying.  I asked Reed if he wanted to ride it again and he said yes.  I told him when his friend was done he could ride it again.  He looked around the playground and saw a push toy so he stopped crying and ran over to the toy.  You could see in his face that he wasn't happy and he kept watching the friend on the ride on toy.  When the friend got off the toy Reed dropped his toy and ran over to ride it again.

Reed was using his imagination today on the playground.   He was playing with the push popper toy but he had it upside down pushing it against the fence making a funny noise.  I went over and asked him what he was doing and he told me.  I said, "Oh your mowing the lawn", but he turned to me and said, "No, blowing the leaves", then turned his head again and started blowing leaves.

14b. Engages in sociodramatic play

Reed was playing in the kitchen center pretending to cook in a pot.  He had a cover on the pot and a friend came over.  The friend had something they wanted to put in the pot so Reed opened it and let them put their item in the pot with his.  He then shook the pot.

Reed had fun playing with the dump truck and block letters today.  What made it interesting to watch is he was trying to get a large amount of blocks to fit in the dump truck.  Every time he thought he had them all in and started to move the truck some of the blocks would fall out.  He would again try to get the blocks back in the truck and then would move again and some blocks would fall out again. Each time the blocks fell out of the truck he tried to rearrange them so they would all stay in.  He was very persistent and finally he arranged them in the truck so they would stay and you could see how proud of himself he was.  He did though only go a few feet and then dumped them all out.

Reed was playing with a doll and there was a empty box on the floor.  Reed took the baby and put it into the box.  He then took a blanket, put it on top of the baby and said, "Shush baby sleeping", as Ms. Deanna walked by him.

Reed had fun playing in the kitchen today.  He took all dishes and stacked them up in size order.  He put all the big ones on the bottom and small ones on top.  He stopped for a second and was just standing there looking at the dishes.   One small dish was stuck in between two big dishes.  He took it out, put it on top, did a little hop, turned and walked away.

11b. Persists

Reed is beginning to demonstrate recognition of written words, like "red", "up", "down". His consistency with identifying a few other written words when asked to pick them from a list of words is not perfect, but is clearly better than pure guesswork (i.e. he gets it right with higher probability than randomly picking from among the words in front of him).

Reed VanBuren | February 27, 2015 (posted by Gene)

Some words that Reed uses are not obvious when first heard...

Reed has been playfully seeing "spiders" around (particularly orange ones). Look for him to say "spider!"

Though improving in using the correct word more and more, Reed typically says "mice" when he is trying to say "mine".

Rarely does Reed get "inside" or "outside" correct. Usually it comes out "indice" or "outdice". This seems so ingrained that we expect it will take a long time to sort out.

Reed has never done well with words that start with "f" (comes out as a "p" or "d" sound, like "dive" instead of "five") or "tr" (usually sounds more like a "k" sound, like "kuck" instead of "truck"). "s" words occasionally become "d" words as well.

Reed really had fun playing with a empty box.  He put a baby inside and put a blanket over the doll in the box.  He said, "Shush baby sleeping".

Reed went over to the container of blocks, dumpped them and walked away.  He went over to another container of toys and went to dump them.  I went over and aked if he wanted to play with the toys and he said, "No".  I helpped him put them back on the shelf and then walked with him to the container he did dump on the floor.  I asked if he wanted to build with me using the blocks and he said, "No".  I then said to him, "Ok Reed if you dont want to build with them can you help me pick them up".   Reed did help me pick up all the block and said, "Your welcome", and went to play with friends.   He does make us laugh.

While sitting eating snack we wrote numbers on a chalk board and asked the children what they were.  Every time we turned the board around Reed told us what number it was, 1-5.  We then changed the numbers around so they weren't in order and he was still able to tell us the numbers.

12a. Recognizes and recalls

During circle we were singing a song that counted to five.  We held up our hands and  pointing to each finger, 1-5, while we sang the song.  When the song said, "we have five fingers",  Reed held up all five fingers on his hand and said, "five fingers".

Reed and his friend were on the playground together.  Reed dropped his piece of chalk and his friend picked it up for him and gave it him.

Reed and two friends were playing in water table and they were asked if they could find the green fish they all were able to show us where the green fish was.
