Hi,
Wayne Betts and I wonder whether an upgrade of the tofpdaq.starp and
tofp.starp would be an approriate step this summer. For Wayne there are
the obvious security issues involved in any machine that is connected to
the network: most if not all STAR machines are registered with ITD. ITD
requires us to keep our machines secure, however both machines are
running RH6 and therefore not updated anymore (RH6 support has been
phased out more than a year ago). The benefits for us would be that we
don't need to worry about the machines loosing outbound network
connectivity and that the machines could run along with Wayne's
STAR-wide update schedulers (like the tofgas machine already does).
Wayne is aware of the critical mission that these machines have and will
always contact me in case of (emergency) updates.
What I would like to suggest is buying two new harddisks (one for tofp
and one for tofr) which will have the new operating systems installed
and keep the old disks (w/ the RH6 on it) as a backup. This guarantees a
working system in October, even if it would mean that we had to go back
to the old version/harddisk (i am not aware of any kernel issues for the
PCI DAQ cards, but don't like to find out any when it is too late)
Comments?
cheers,
Frank
