Pion identification

Here I discuss the issues specific to pion identification. Success of the UCAL calibration (whose usefulness had been hitherto limited by effects of radiation damage in the scintillator) enabled a correction for the inefficiency of pion PID due to a Cherenkov (C2) veto. This made it possible to obtain normalized yields of $ \pi^+$ and $ \pi^-$ published in [26] and discussed in Chapter  5. Table  4.7 summarizes the conditions necessary to identify a track as a pion, in addition to those necessary to validate a track and described in Section  4.3.
