Dear Sub System Managers and others,
This E-mail is to give you as much detail as is presently known
about the near term RHIC schedule. Please note that none of the dates or
plans below are fixed, other than the meeting dates and times. The
working assumption is that the schedule for the switch over from d-Au to
protons, as well as the near term (i.e. ~ next week) schedules will be
discussed and fixed at this Wednesday's weekly RHIC Collider/Experiments
Coordination meeting.
The RHIC Operations budget for this year (FY03) is apparently still
not finalized. My understanding is that final Budget numbers are
expected by tomorrow morning (Tuesday, March 18th). In light of this,
the usual Monday afternoon meeting between the Experiments and the
Collider people to fix the schedule for the week has been postponed
until 11:00 am tomorrow. Until this meeting takes place he plan is to
continue in Physics mode.
It sounds like the Collider people will ask for, and likely receive,
an access this Wednesday to search for "Ice Balls", as well as to
inspect and clean one of the magnet buss connections that has been
problematic. Estimates of the time necessary for this access are 2 to 4
hours. From comments made at this mornings C-AD EP&S meeting it looks
like C-AD would like to avoid having this turn into an open access for
everyone, as once many groups go in the accesses historically have
become longer. At this point I assume that if an access does take place,
and people have a need to go in, that we'll get access. It may be
controlled access however, which restricts the number of people that can
enter the WAH at any one time.
The idea was suggested at this mornings EP&S meeting that if this is
the last week of the d-Au run that perhaps the Beam Experiments should
be postponed until Sunday night. This will be discussed at tomorrow's
weekly scheduling meeting.
As things stand now, the plan is that the d-Au run will continue
until Monday morning. At this point the Collider people have indicated
that they will need two days to switch over and prepare for the proton
run. No details have been specified for this period, but if taken
literally this would mean that we'd have access to the WAH from ~8:00 am
on Monday morning until 8:00 am on Wednesday. I pressed to try and fix
this schedule this morning, but it appears that it will remain fluid
until the Wednesday meeting.
There has not been a discussion yet concerning scheduled accesses to
the WAH during the proton run. A few of the other experiments have
stated that they'll need a few days of access at a point a few weeks
into the proton commissioning period. I'd like to hear opinions from Sub
System managers on what the STAR position should be regarding scheduled
accesses during the proton run. An option to consider is that we request
weekly 8 hour scheduled access periods during the five week proton
commissioning period (starting the week after the discussed two day
switch over access), and then one scheduled access in the middle of the
three weeks of proton physics running.
I'll let you know as soon as any of these schedule issues get fixed.
Greetings,
Bill
