Limiting Hydrodynamic Behavior in Central Gold-Gold Collisions at RHIC

In nuclear collisions that are not exactly head-on, the collision process converts the initial-state spatial anisotropy into momentum anisotropy in the final state. A quantitative measure of the final momentum anisotropy (flow) offers important insights into the bulk properties of the excited phase of nuclear matter that the collision produces. More...

Apparent scaling for the azimuthal anisotropy of Lambda and K0s

In Au-Au collisions at RHIC one of the first measurements was the observation of collective harmonic flow for charged hadrons and that this flow showed a strong pt dependence. This observation has since been extended to that the identified particles. More...

Directed Flow: the First Harmonic of Azimuthal Anisotropy

If we focus on a subset of particles emerging from a collision with about the same beam-axis velocity (or rapidity), then directed flow represents a preferential emission towards a single direction in the transverse plane (aligned with the plane of the colliding nuclei), whereas the much larger elliptic flow represents a preferential emission in two directions 180 degrees apart in the transverse plane. Models predict that directed flow at RHIC should be almost zero over a range of rapidities centered on midrapidity. More...

Higher Harmonics of the Azimuthal Anisotropy

This is the first measurement of higher harmonics of the momentum anisotropy at RHIC, and it is expected that these higher harmonics will be a sensitive test of the initial configuration of the system, since they provide a Fourier analysis of the shape in momentum space which can be related back to the initial shape in position space.

The results as a function of transverse momentum are shown in the figure for minimum bias collisions (0 - 80% centrality). Shown for v4 are both the analysis relative to the second harmonic event plane, v4{EP2}, and the three-particle cumulant, v4{3}. More...

Search for Evidence of Delayed Hadronization in Central Gold-Gold Collisions at RHIC

As a result of local charge conservation, when particle-antiparticle pairs are produced, they are correlated initially in position space. If hadronization occurs early in the scenario of a partonic phase followed by a hadronic phase, as depicted by the upper pair in the illustration, the two particles would be expected to separate in rapidity due to expansion and rescattering in the strongly interacting medium. More...
